Interactive Form-Finding of Elastic Origami
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper, we propose a novel computational method to simulate and design origami whose form is governed by the equilibrium of forces from the elastic bending of each panel. In special, we explore statically indeterminate origami structure that can be manipulated by pin supporting finite number of vertices. The computational method is proposed so that we can interactively explore the design space of such origami form. The concept of kinematic origami tessellation based on bending of panels is introduced.

Submitted for the MAR10 Meeting of The American Physical Society Capillary Origami Controlled by Electrowetting MIGUEL PINEIRUA, JOSE BICO, BENOIT ROMAN, PMMH — What happens if a water droplet is deposited over an elastic sheet? The sheet spontaneously wraps around droplet? This is possible if the capillary forces due to the liquid/air interface overcome the bending stiffness of the elastic she...

Capillary origami is the wrapping of a usual fluid drop by a planar elastic membrane due to the interplay between capillary and elastic forces. Here, we use a drop of magnetic fluid whose shape is known to strongly depend on an applied magnetic field. We study the quasistatic and dynamical behaviors of such a magnetic capillary origami. We report the observation of an overturning instability th...
متن کاملInteractive System for Origami Creation
This paper proposes a new system which supports origami creators who have no special knowledge about origami creation to create their unique works easily in 3-D virtual space. Moreover, 2-D diagrams or 3-D animation are automatically made for describing the folding processes so that people can re-build these works. Users can decide folding operations and create works by an interactive interface...
متن کاملFolding to Curved Surfaces: A Generalized Design Method and Mechanics of Origami-based Cylindrical Structures
Origami structures enrich the field of mechanical metamaterials with the ability to convert morphologically and systematically between two-dimensional (2D) thin sheets and three-dimensional (3D) spatial structures. In this study, an in-plane design method is proposed to approximate curved surfaces of interest with generalized Miura-ori units. Using this method, two combination types of crease l...
متن کاملDesign of Infinitesimally and Finitely Flexible Origami Based on Reciprocal Figures
This paper investigates novel computational design method for infinitesimally and finitely foldable rigid origami based on solving a first-order folding mode, which can be represented by a reciprocal figure. We derive these graphical conditions from a matrix representation of rigid origami, and extend the conditions to cases when the surface includes holes. We propose an algorithm to obtain for...
